to a particular segment or target.
Whereas marketing aims to identify markets that will purchase a
product (business) or support an idea and then facilitate that
purchase, advertising is the paid communication by which
information about the product or idea is transmitted to
potential consumers.
Public service advertising, non-commercial advertising, public
interest advertising, cause marketing, and social marketing are
different terms for (or aspects of) the use of sophisticated
advertising and marketing communications techniques (generally
associated with commercial enterprise) on behalf of
non-commercial, public interest issues and initiatives.
